The Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) is the key protective element inside a surge arrester. Manufactured from high-purity zinc oxide combined with additives like barium oxide and manganese oxide, the MOV provides superior non-linear voltage-current characteristics.
Under normal voltage, the MOV exhibits high resistance. Upon transient overvoltage or lightning strike, it switches rapidly to a low-resistance state, safely discharging the surge energy. It is widely used in 10kV to 220kV metal oxide surge arresters and other high-energy protection systems.
